What Does Challenge Mean to You?

“Challenge is the pathway to engagement and progress in our lives. But not all challenges are created equal. Some challenges make us feel alive, engaged, connected, and fulfilled. Others simply overwhelm us. Knowing the difference as you set bigger and bolder challenges for yourself is critical to your sanity, success, and satisfaction.” ~ Brendon Burchard

How do you react to when faced with a “challenge”? Do you feel heavy and think of a challenge as a negative thing? Do you feel excitement and look forward to challenge as a good thing? A challenge can be a good and/or a “bad” thing depending on our disposition and/or our current situation.

Challenges present us with the opportunity to grow, learn and explore.  By changing the way you look at a challenge, you can significantly impact the effect it has on you. Look at challenge as a game, an opportunity, a contest of sorts.

If the posing challenge excites you, take advantage of that excitement and go after it with gusto! If the challenge doesn’t feel so good take a moment or two and plan your strategy for overcoming it

When faced with a challenge:

Accept & Attack it:  Don’t avoid the challenge! Accepting it is happening and facing it head on is going to prove to be much more effectchallenge1ive than avoiding it. Avoiding it will only make it worse. Think of it like weeds in your garden, if you avoid or ignore them, they eventually grow and take over your garden.

Break it down:  You don’t eat an elephant in one bite, as the saying goes, so look at the challenge and break it into smaller pieces. What can you do right now, what could or do you need help with, etc.

Ask for help:  You don’t have to do everything on your own, it’s OK to ask for help! Sometimes we’re just too close to the situation and we need help seeing the obvious. It’s always good to get another view or opinion of a situation as well.

Reflect:  When you’re feeling overwhelmed, take a moment to reflect on all the challenges you’ve overcome in your life already. Are any of them similar? How did you handle other challenges? Remember you can do this! Take a moment and think about the challenge without limits. How could you tackle this challenge if you had no limits on time, money, resources, physical abilities, etc. Now use those creative thoughts to create new or different ways of taking on the challenge. Be patient with yourself and give yourself the time you need.

Challenges can only be overcome by taking action, so get rid of the excuses and take control of your situation.
