Optimism is it something you can learn?

We all have one of those “Sally/Stephan Sunshine” friends, we know of someone like that or maybe that’s you. You know those people that are always happy, the ones that could be struck by lightning and they’d find something positive about it!

The same is true of “Debbie/Danny Downer”, these are the people that could win a million dollars and they’d complain about the taxes and what trouble it has brought them.

Why are people so different? Why do they see things so differently in the same or similar circumstance? Why do only some choose optimism? It’s hard to say. I’m sure there are many many reasons.

Are people born optimistic or is it a learned behavior? Can you learn to be optimistic?

I believe you can learn optimism. I also believe it’s one of, if not the most important quality you can develop to achieve greater success and happiness.

Optimism is a way of thinking and you can train your mind to think this way. There have been many studies of the happiest and most successful people in every field, many book written about happiness & success and of course classes, lectures and workshops on the subject.  There are basically two ways of dealing with life that successful and happy people deploy:

optimismLook for the good in every situation:   Even when you have a setback or challenge, look for the bright side, there is always something. Did you learn something? Are you a little better at or more knowledgeable then you were before you started? Did you meet someone new?

Find the lesson in every situation: Every situation (good and bad) can teach us something. Ask yourself, “What am I supposed to learn from this?” It may not be obvious, but you will always find something if you keep looking.

To remain optimistic, make sure you have a vision for your life and goals to reach that vision. When you’re making positive steps toward your goals and dreams you can’t help but be optimistic!

Your mind cannot be pessimistic and optimistic at the same time so focus on optimism and you’ll see positive shifts in your attitude and your life.
