Just Say No

We all have or have had those things in our lives that we dread, maybe it’s the friend or family obligation, or that friend that is just so negative you always feel deplete after you’ve spent time with them, it could be your job, being in a relationship with the wrong partner, etc.

As Ms. de Angelis points out, you must find the courage to say no to the things and people that don’t support us, that bring us down instead of lift us up.

I had a position that I loved in that I loved the work I did, I had a great team that reported to me and I loved standing up for the people in the company, however the environment was toxic.  I left feeling cranky almost every day, I dreaded Monday’s which started to ruin Sundays, and my friends and family were worried about my well being.  After leaving that position I felt so much better physically and mentally and I was able to enjoy life again and pursue my dreams!

Was it frightening?  Absolutely!  However, I surrounded myself with supportive people and avoided the negative people or situations which brought me down.  I refused to put myself into any situation that wasn’t supportive, fun and/or advantageous to my happiness and success.

It’s hard to let go of things that you’re comfortable with even if they are not good for you.  Our natural tendency is to “stay safe”, however taking the risk to move to a happier place is most often the best choice.

Take an inventory of your life, the people in your life, the commitments – are they supporting you?  What can you say “no” to?  What do you need to do to live your life with authenticity?
